Sustainability Effects of Cloud Computing

I was part of a group that handed in a EU application some 10 days ago. It wasn't one of those truly huge applications with a dozen partners, but rather a "Marie Curie Innovative Training Networks" application. We applied for money to hire 10 ph.d. students at five nodes in four different countries.

The application is called "Energy-aware cloud-based software engineering" and the application is a marriage between technical and sustainability aspects of (future) cloud computing. Here's a summary of the central challenge in two short sentences: Cloud computing is slated to grow explosively. How can sustainability become part of the criteria by which (future) cloud computing infrastructure is planned and realised? Or more formally (from the application): "[there is a] lack of professional competencies - and hence of proper training - for engineering and deploying sustainable and energy-efficient cloud-based software applications in terms of both software development and system operation." A report from mid-2013 estimates the possibility of major (> 85%) economic and energy savings in migrating business software to the cloud - but how do we make that promise feasible? The proposed answer in our application is through developing the right competencies in a tight collaboration between industry and academia. Each of the five nodes in the application consists of two partners; one academic and one industry partner. The five nodes are:

- Academic institution Vrije Universitet Amsterdam (VUA) and industry/partner organisation GreenIT Amsterdam
- Academic institution University of Amsterdam (UVA) and industry/partner organisation SURFsara
- Academic institution Politecnico di Milano (PDM) and industry/partner organisation CEFRIEL
- Academic institution KTH Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and industry/partner organisation The Interactive Institute Swedish ICT (TII)
- Academic institution University of Zürich (UZH) and industry/partner organisation Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (EMPA)

It's fair to say that the first three academic partners primarily focus on the technical challenges involved, while the last two partners primarily focus on issues pertaining to sustainability. The application is a cooperation though and an important point is that the ph.d. students we hope to recruit will visit other institutions in the network. It is definitely fair to say that the brunt of the work with putting the application together was done by people at the two Dutch universities. Despite this, I will here quickly mention what UZH plans to do and a tiny bit more about the Swedish node.

University of Zürich is primarily represented by professor Lorenz Hilty and "his" two planned ph.d. students will work on "life-cycle assessment" (e.g. investigating the relation between cloud software services and LCA) and "establishing sustainability as a non-functional requirement in software engineering".

The "Swedish node" consists of KTH (me) and The Interactive Institute (Cecilia Katzeff). It was Cecilia who inquired if I wanted to join forces with her and work on the application some time before Christmas. She then went away on vacation for two weeks and when she missed a before-Christmas telephone conference I kind of slipped from being her sidekick to being responsible for the Swedish node.

KTH is responsible for a work package called "Social Sustainability Effects of Cloud Computing Systems". The two proposed KTH ph.d. students will more specifically work on:

"User Behavours in Cloud Computing Systems". The main question here is:
- How do current user behaviour in relation to cloud services affect hardware and software architectures/requirements, efficiency and sustainability aspects of cloud computing?

"Social Sustainability Effects of Cloud Computing Systems". The main two questions here are:
- Which are the stakeholders in the development and deployment of current and future cloud computing architectures and services and which are the economic incentives of primary and secondary stakeholders?
- What are the social aspects (convenience, personalisation, perceived control, influence, surveillance, privacy) of moving from decentralised (p2p) architectures to more centralised cloud architectures and terminals (laptops, tablets, smartphones), i.e. with relatively sparse storage facilities but high bandwidth?

A larger number of technical questions and tasks have also been formulated in the application, for example concerning:
- New paradigms for sustainable cloud eco-systems
- Virtualization strategies
- Energy efficiency metrics and practices
- Applications for hotspot identification
- Multi-party services transparencies
- Hardware-software integration

The application is quite voluminous (as these things tend to be) but this is the only summary I will post on the blog for now. I will of course get back with more information if the application is granted!

Our new master's level track

I wrote a blog post about our proposed master's level track, "Sustainable Information Society" four months ago. At that time there were altogether 13 proposals for master's level tracks (specialisations) in our new master's program that is slated to start in the autumn of 2016 (one and a half years from now).

Some time later, during the first half of November, our first, second and third year students in the Media Technology Engineering programme were invited to cast votes for their two favourite (proposed) tracks. At that point, there were only 10 tracks left and we knew that that number had to be further whittled down to somewhere between 6-8 tracks.

Each track had to prepare for the trial election by putting together a short text (1.5-2 pages long) that contained a short description of the track, the relation to previous courses in the program, a description of the team/group that would be responsible for the track, the prospective labor market (e.g. companies that are interested in hosting master's thesis students from the track) and formal prerequisites.

I teach a course about sustainability and ICT/Media Technology, but unfortunately only to our fourth year students. I think that many of these students "get it" after they have taken our course, but these younger (first to third-year) students have not yet taken that course and we were thus a little worried about not being able to woo them solely with our short description. The results from the election were presented before Christmas and it turned out that while ours was not the most popular track it was neither the least popular. We ended up somewhere in the middle of the road and were pretty happy about that.

Earlier this week, we found out that our proposed track will be one of six tracks that will be offered when the new master's program starts in 2016. Hooray! 

That has some practical implications that will play out over the next year or two:
- Our course about sustainability and ICT/Media Technology will be moved from the fourth to the third year. The course is compulsory so all students in the programme have to take it. That course will also constitute a big ad for our master's level track.
- Students will be able to choose two out of the six available tracks. The students who choose our track will at a minimum read two courses of ours (7.5 credits each). That means we "own" these students 50% of the time for half a year.
- These two courses have to be formally set up (registered etc.) already this term and they will of course furthermore have to be developed (filled with content) and manned.
- Except for these two courses, students will also have the option of choosing to study a project course (15 credits) and to write their master's thesis (30 credits) within our track for a total of 60 credits (= one full year of studies). Our master's students also have yet another 30 credits for optional courses - which means they could choose to study even more courses pertaining to sustainability (and ICT/Media Technology) should they want to.

A practical effect of this is that I have a hard time thinking I will teach anything but sustainability two years from now. There will also be plenty of opportunities for my colleagues and fellow team members to teach about sustainability instad of other subjects. That will be great!

It might be the case that we will be unique in being able to offer this specialisation in ICT & sustainability in all of Sweden and perhaps also in all of Europe. We would hopefully, at some point in the future, even be able recruit students from elsewhere in Sweden (or Europe) to come to KTH and choose to study our track. That's more of a dream than a realistic scenario at the moment and the immediate challenge that we have in front of us right now is to develop the track itself in the first place. All of this is anyway totally great news for me and for our sustainability team.


I have translated the first part of the short "selling" text we wrote to convince our students to choose our specialisation, here it is:


Track: Sustainable Information Society 

Description:
"Sustainability" is a nice catchword that is used at various ceremonial occasions - but it also represents one of the 21st century's biggest challenges. No scientific discipline and no university programme can any longer argue that sustainability is "someone else's problem". In this track, we assume that media and ICT can have both positive and negative effects in regards to sustainability and our goal is to understand and maximise the benefits while minimising the negative effects. We want to be involved in building a sustainable future where ICT can play a central role!

The research team behind this track already have established contacts with many different partners (e.g. Ericsson, TeliaSonera, Coop, The City of Stockholm, FOI Defence Analysis etc.) who are interested in hosting master's thesis students in this field. There is also much interest in establishing interdisciplinary collaborations with people who are engaged in Media Technology, ICT and sustainability both in business and within KTH, and, it will furthermore also be possible to (in addition to the required courses) choose to take elective courses where you will meet students from other parts of KTH.

The courses that are included in the track contain both theoretical and practical elements and are divided into two courses based on "what industry asks for today" and "what our future society needs tomorrow". The first of these courses aims to provide knowledge of specific tools for the sustainable ICT/Media Technology engineer, for example life cycle assessment (LCA) of products and services within the media and ICT area, systems thinking, environmental psychology, how to communicate about sustainability, etc.

Follow-up (autumn 2014)

Ongoing or long-term projects often generate follow-up blog posts. A submission to a conference will often generate a blog post about that conference (some months later). A research project will generate a new blog perhaps three or six or nine months later. Some "projects" (blog posts) don't generate follow-up blog posts even thought they "should". A blog post about an article that was submitted but that was rejected will most often not generate a follow-up blog posts, so, every six months I go back and look for "loose ends" to follow up and tie together.

In these follow-up blog posts, I don't follow up everything that has happened, but only create closure for those projects and blog posts that can come to an end by writing a short blurb about them.

I here primarily look at things that has happened during the autumn (July - Dec) but have also started to go back a full year to see if there are any loose ends that I can tie up.


Spring 2014

My near-death Airbnb experience from January is after less than a year on the blog already the third most read blog post I have ever written - and readers continue to drop in. My experience of Airbnb itself has changed a lot since then and I have used Airbnb on no less than 10 separate occasions during the rest of 2014.

I have a "lapsed" paper we were supposed to have written - Cheating and creative play in EVE Online - but it hasn't panned out. It turned out to be harder than expected to "convert" this master's thesis into an academic paper, not the least because I don't really keep up with reading academic stuff related to (computer) game studies any longer. It unfortunately doesn't feel like this (game-related) project is at the top of the list of things to do right now.

I have another "lapsed" paper, this time about The Global Dimension in Engineering Education. That project changed its project leader and lost speed. That together with me dropping that ball (having a very high work load at the beginning of the autumn term) meant that this project didn't really reach the finishing line - despite being 90% finished. A pity.

Our research grant application Crises-proofed lifestyles: Alternativ lifestyles as design material for services in a sustainable energy system was unfortunately rejected for the second time. The judgement was that "its relevance to energy was low" and that the project "did not fit within the area of the call". That's a bummer because this application is excellent and we would really really like to do this research project. Both me and my colleagues are very motivated to take this application further although we don't yet know when or where.

I wrote a blog post about Our CHI video and we submitted it just a week ago to the CHI video program. The video is 5 minutes long and it will at some point be published on YouTube but for now we will wait to see if it will be accepted to the CHI conference or not.

An Enemy of the People

I went to the theatre with my wife this weekend, we say Henrik Ibsen's "An Enemy of the People" (En folkefiende) at Stockholms Stadsteater. The play was amazing. We visit the theatre now and then but I have to say this play is probably the best I've ever seen (together with Friedrich Schiller's "The Robbers" that we saw together three years ago). What both these plays shared was that they have been transposed from Germany 235 years ago and from Norway 135 years ago to present-day realities. The very talented Swedish-Norwegian director Alexander Mørk-Eidem has moved Ibsens's 19th century health resort with its health baths to a municipal swimming pool - the pride and the motor of the local economy (but built with the help of borrowed money).

The play treated a vast number of different topics such as the relationship between husbands and wives, parents and children, brother and sister, between public and private, of how long you should be held accountable for a long ago left-behind troubled background, of (historic) blame, and, not the least of the relationship between media, politics, expertise, the mob, democracy and fascism. Behind these topics lies core issues about truth versus power. Who is right; the whistleblower who is socially inept, difficult preachy pain-in-the-ass bastard and who loves to hear his own voice but is prone not to listen to others, or, the moderate, calm politician who doesn't want to make any hasty rash decisions that might have very negative consequences for the local economy and her own career (i.e. who wants to sweep a possible scandal under the carpet)?

One thing that made the theatre play into a joyful spectacle was how it repeatedly and ingeniously broke "the fourth wall". That is the wall Francis Underwood in TV drama House of Cards recurrently breaks when he turns to the camera and speaks directly to the viewer. In the play the audience suddenly became participants at the public meeting in the local school and we were invited to vote on issues raised at that meeting. The aspiring singer-songwriter in the play at one point turned to the audience and told them they could buy his CD for 100 SEK after the show (or listen to his songs on Spotify and all but spelled out his name). We took it for a joke until he flashed copies of the CDs from the stage at the end of the show and actually did turn up to sell them afterwards. The actors also had self-reflective discussions about what they were trying to accomplish and on what they were doing in the play and on the stage in relation to the mission statement of the theatre company and in relation to the manuscript of the play. It's a little hard to explain but it was pretty awesome - a joyful spectacle that forced the audience to reconsider their role in the play (they usually don't have one except as passive spectators).

Where Ibsen's play stops at the hypocritical attitudes of the small-town bourgeoisie, Mørk-Eidem's play also lightly weaved in climate change into the story. The whistleblower turned directly towards the audience and accused us of (same as the small-town bourgeoisie of the play) turning a blind eye to the consequences of our actions and instead opting for having a nice time here-and-now (don't rock the boat!). That scene touched a raw nerve for me and all of sudden made the play a lot more relevant for me personally. It is possible to, after having seen the play, ask questions such as:

To what extent are me/we as scientists prepared to present inconvenient truths? What if telling such truths will have negative consequences for our public standing, our careers or our relationships with friends and family (for example at the Christmas dinner)? It is so much easier to milden the formulations and make them more palatable to the powers that be - especially if we are rewarded with whatever it is that is important to us. One of the messages of the play is that almost can be bought, or will turn a blind eye if something valuable or important enough is at stake. And we should not underestimate prosaic drivers such as our own convenience or financial health. How much are you willing to risk, how much are you willing to put at stake for "the truth" - when no-one appreciates what you are trying to do?

All in all, the play was amazing. I recommend everyone in Stockholm to rush to see it. There are hardly any tickets for sale during January to March, but you will have better luck finding tickets here from April until the beginning of June. My strong advice is to go see it! You will thank me afterwards. I sure regret that I haven't gone to see any of Mørk-Eidem's previous plays in Stockholm but will from now on keep my eyes open for any future plays of his.

My new year's promises for 2015

For the third year in a row, I will make a few (academic) promises for the new year, but I will start by following up on last year's four promises:

Promise: My first promise what to read 200 pages of academic articles per month during January - June (on my sabbatical) and write blog posts about it.
Outcome: I did read quite a lot of academic articles although I clocked in closer to 150 pages per month rather than 200 and I only managed to do it for five rather than six months. I did write blog posts about articles I read in February, March, April, May and June.

Promise: My second promise was to catch up with writing about "books that I have read" on this blog as I was constantly writing about books I had read half a year earlier and it was no fun.
Outcome: I did partially catch up and my upcoming blog post about "books I have read" will treat books I read only a few months ago, in November.

Promise: My third promise was to husband my time on the 6-month long sabbatical I took last year (January - July).
Outcome: I do think I for the most part used the time effectively. I had very regular work habits (I was physically in an office five days per week) and I accomplished quite a lot, including writing academic papers (which was an important goal).

Promise: My forth promise was to use a lot of "collaborative consumption" services on my sabbatical.
Outcome: I didn't really try out a lot of different services I did use Airbnb extensively both when doing trips with my family as well as when I rented a big apartment in Toronto for the CHI conference in April together with three colleagues of mine.


My new promises for 2015 are:

1. To again read academic articles during the period from January - June. The goal is 200 pages per month but I'm ok if I "only" reach 150 pages per month too.

2. Just as I promised two years ago, I will again make an effort to tame the mess in my office. Parts of the massive amounts of papers in my office are actually organised, but much remains to do since papers have gradually accumulated in my office during the last 10+ years. My aim is use 30 minutes every day to sort through, organise or throw away stuff - but since I now know that this is in fact unrealistic, I'm fine with using 30 minutes at least twice and preferably three times (or more) per week.

3. Last year I promised (and accomplished) to use the time spent at my sabbatical effectively. My promise for this year is that I will use my time as effectively as I did last spring despite not being on a sabbatical.

4. Just as I need to clear the physical piles of papers in my office, my brand new promise for 2015 is to find procedures and time to work with and reduce my e-mail. I have 6000 messages in my inbox and I want to reduce that by at least 75% - to less than 1500 - at the end of the year.

I have also made a performance-related promise to myself about writing and publishing academic papers but don't feel confident enough to go public with it so that will remain my secret...

This is the third time I do this and just a last year I top this blog post off with my top recommendations for books I suggest you should read.

Just as last year, this blog post doesn't exactly summarise the books that I read during 2014, but rather the books that I wrote about in the blog during 2014. 2014 blog stats

The first blog post of the year looks at some blog statistics - for the third year in a row (here's last year's blog post). The last time I wrote a meta-blog post (a blog post about the blog) was when I published my 300th blog post three months ago - right after the fourth anniversary of the blog. This is blog post 320.

STATISTICS

When looked at the number of visitors a year ago, the numbers had increased by 60% in 2013 compared to 2012. That represented unprecedented growth in the number of visitors (as well as in the number of blog posts - up to 89 in 2013 compared to 73 blog posts in 2012). In 2014 I published 83 blog posts and the number of visitors again increased by almost 30% compared to the previous year.




This blog was started 4.5 years ago but close to 40% of all visits happened during the last 12 months. My hypothesis last year was that Facebook drove traffic here since I had then just started to write Facebook status updates with links to the most recent blog post. This year it instead seems like a lot of the traffic on the blog comes from Google searches (more on that a little further down).

Last year's cut-off limit to make it to the top-10 list was 400 page views. When I now looked through the 319 blog posts that have published since the blog started, this year no less than 27 texts have had more than 400 or more page views, so I decided to extend the top 10 list into a top-12 list. It is interesting to for example note that a blog post like "EIT ICT Labs" was number 6 on last year's list, but despite rising from 490 to 689 views still didn't make it to this year's list (is was number 15). The number of page views necessary to make it to the top-10 list has risen from around 200 two years ago, to 400 one year ago and 775 right now.

This time around I thought it would be interesting to have a look at the bottom of the list and see if I could discern any patterns at "the bottom of the barrel". These are the least read blog posts since the blog was started:

The very last two blog posts were published recently and have not had that much time to garner a lot of readers yet so they might yet climb out of the bottom of the list. Number 316 ("line-up") looks like it was published in 2010, but was in fact published two years later and backdated to when it "should have been" published. "Sneaking in" a blog post retroactively is a great way to make sure nobody ever reads it... The other blog post are more of a mystery. It feels kind of random, but I do notice that none of the blog posts were published in 2013 but that five of the blog posts were published in 2011 when the blog had much few readers. I can easily see some older blog posts languishing in the back currents of the blog. It's otherwise quite hard for me to see why these blog posts in particular would have been especially boring to read and how to go about not to produce any more "duds" in the future. Perhaps the titles of these blog posts sound non-exciting? Perhaps they were published at an inopportune moment? Perhaps I didn't market them well (including by linking to them in later blog posts)? Or perhaps they are more bland and for some reason less "Googleable" than other blog posts? Who knows?

A year ago I wrote that:

"of the 236 blog posts that have been published at this point in time:
- 30 blog posts (13%) have been read 200 times or more
- 74 blog posts (31%) have been read 100-200 times
- 119 blog posts (50%) have been read 26-99 times
- 13 blog posts (6%) have been read 25 times or less"

Looking back at those very same 236 blog posts that were published between 2010-2013, today:
- 55 blog posts (23%) have been read 200 times or more
- 103 blog posts (44%) have been read 100-200 times
- 74 blog posts (31%) have been read 26-99 times
- 4 blog posts (2%) have been read 25 times or less

Of the 55 blog posts that had been read 200 times or more, no less than 16 blog posts (7%) have been read 500 times or more. What this goes to show is that there is plenty of traffic to "older" (pre-2014) blog posts. That might sound good but I'm not sure it is. I instead have the feeling that fewer people follow the blog and read the latest blog posts compared to a year ago (even though I nowadays always "announce" new blog posts on Facebook), and that more people find their way to a particular blog post through a Google search. The typical reader might thus be shifting from a regular "reader" to a random "visitor" who pays a visit to the blog exactly once and reads exactly one blog post. That would further mean that the number of visitors to a higher extent will depend on the vicissitudes of almighty Google which is a little worrying. Another sign that reading patterns are changing is the fact that commenting reached a new low during 2014. Only 6 out of 83 blog posts had any comments at all.

When I add the 83 blog posts that were published in 2014, of the 319 blog posts ever published:

- 91 blog posts (28%) have been read 200 times or more
- 120 blog posts (38%) have been read 100-200 times
- 102 blog posts (32%) have been read 26-99 times
- 6 blog posts (2%) have been read 25 times or less

That doesn't look too bad, but I on the other have to jump all the way to the end of September to find the first blog post with more than 100 views. It didn't use to be like that only a year ago and it thus seems that traffic to the latest blog posts are sliding while traffic to the blog as a whole increases. I would furthermore presume that that traffic to older blog posts will be very unevenly distributed with some blog posts acting like "magnets" while many others will languish. I'm pretty sure my very popular blog post about Airbnb will continue to draw many visitors to the blog.

Something I find fascinating is that blog posts about "books I have read" can become quite popular. There are almost 40 such blog posts and I write more than ten new each year. The very most popular of these blog post was published earlier this year and it has been viewed more than 450 times (probably because I write about Guy Standing's book "The Precariat"). Another such blog post has more than 425 views but more than 75% of these blog posts actually has had more than 100 page views. Perhaps I get visitors to these blog posts through the Swedish online bookstore Adlibris which I link to and which links back to my blog posts. That's where I usually buy my book.

Can we live like today without fossil fuels?

Can we live as today without fossil fuels? That is the question David MacKay asked in his book "Sustainable energy: Without the hot air" (available on the Internet).

The book is excellent and the task MacKay set himself is to estimate how much energy we use in our daily lives and compare that to how much energy it would theoretically be possible to generate only with renewable energy sources (wind, sun, hydro etc.). This is a tough challenge indeed since 85% of the energy we use on planet earth currently consists of fossil fules (oil, coal, gas). The big problem with the numbers MacKay uses in his book is that they all refer to Great Britain. What are the corresponding numbers if we would reuse MacKay's categories but count on Sweden instead?

That is the questions I want to have answered and I have thus defined a master's thesis topic that I would like some student to do. That topic is unfortunately not suitable for "my" computer science students and I have therefore posted it to the KTH Degree Project Portal (KTH Exjobbsportal). Since I assume this topic would be most interesting and easy to do for a Swedish-speaking student, I have written up the proposal in Swedish. I can't really be bothered to translate the proposal for this blog post but rather republish it below in Swedish.

Please disseminate the proposal as you see fit. I would love for someone (it doesn't have to be at KTH) to perform this project and write the thesis! I assume that the student in question would have an advisor at his/her "home department" but that I could help out by specifying the task and help out with what I could do in other ways as an informal "extra advisor". Kan vi fortsätta att leva som idag om vi fasar ut våra fossila energikällor och bygger ut de förnyelsebara?


KTH/CSC/MID/STEM-projektet (Daniel Pargman) - Stockholm, Sverige


David MacKays bok ”Sustainable energy: Without the hot air” (”utan skitsnacket”) bryter ny mark genom att ytterst pedagiskt räkna på, sammanställa och förklara allt om alternativen till fossila energikällor. Hur ska vi leva år 2050 och hur kommer vi att producera vår energi om vi måste fasa ut vår användning av fossila bränslen och minska våra CO2-utsläpp med 80% eller mer? Det innovativa greppet MacKay använder sig av är att omvandla all vår samtida konsumtion av energi (transporter, boende, prylar, mat etc.) och alla möjlig framtida (fullt utbyggda) förnyelsebara energikällor (vind, sol, vattenkraft, biobränsle etc.) till en enhetlig skala; energi per person och per dag (kWh/p/d). Går det ens teoretiskt att få ihop det hela? Kan vi leva precis som idag men helt miljövänligt (förnyelsebara istället för fossila energikällor)? Det korta svaret är ”nja”, men mer ärligt är att säga att det starkt lutar mot ett ”nej”.

MacKay utgår från ”the big picture” med uträkningar från grunden och uppåt. Hur mycket regnar det i Storbritannien? Hur högt över havet ligger landet i snitt? Vilken kraft kan man klämma ur vatten som flödar nerströms? Hur mycket energi kan man teoretiskt lägga vantarna på ifall man fångar upp varje regndroppe som faller över Storbritannien? Om vi bortser från land som ligger lågt och där det regnar lite (England) och istället koncentrerar oss på höglandet där det regnar mycket (Skottland), vilken potential finns då kvar hos vattenkraften ifall den byggdes ut maximalt? Svaret är 7 kWh per person och dag i Skottland (jämfört med 1 kWh/p/d i det borträknade England). Hur stor del av denna potential kan tyglas för mänsklig bruk? Sådär håller MacKay på och går igenom alla möjliga och omöjliga källor till förnyelsebar energi i Storbritannien. På konsumtionssidan utgår MacKay istället från den livsstil och energiförbrukning som en genomsnittlig engelsman har i medelklassen eller övre medelklassen (“typical moderately-affluent person”). Hur mycket energi använder denne person för att framställa sin mat (mer för köttätare, mindre för vegetarianter), för att transportera sig själv och sina varor, för att värma upp sin bostad och kyla sin mat och för att framställa alla de prylar och saker som han eller hon konsumerar (1300 kilo prylar per person och år - 4 kilo nya prylar per dag). En typisk engelsk bilägare åker i snitt 50 kilometer per dag och med en typisk engelsk bil motsvarar detta 40 kWh/p/d. 

David MacKays bok är exemplarisk och hela boken finns dessutom tillgänglig gratis på Internet. MacKay var tidigare professor i fysik vid Cambridge och är numera chief scientific adviser to the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change, DECC. Hans bok till trots så har han inte någon bakgrund inom ett energi-relaterat område. I första hand är MacKay dock folkbildare och en stor pedagog. Han har en blodhunds instinkter att söka upp och få tag på de siffror han behöver och absolut inget får stå i vägen för hans mission att förenkla, förtydliga och förklara. Han höftar och avrundar vilt och använder en sällsynt hänsynslös kombination av räknekonst och sunt förnuft för att tränga igenom horder av skilda enheter och förledande exakta, men obegripliga eller svårjämförliga data och siffror.

Bokens stora “svaghet” är att den helt utgår från förhållanden som gäller i Storbritannien. Detta exjobb går ut på att “översätta” MacKays bok till svenska förhållanden. Gissningsvis finns det stora likheter mellan förhållandena in Storbritannien och Sverige på konsumtionssidan emedan potentialen för att bygga ut de förnyelsebara energikällorna kan mer annorlunda ut i en jämförelse mellan Sverige och Storbritannien. Ditt uppdrag är att undersöka hur! 

En bra start för att ställning till detta exjobbsförslag är att läsa detta 10 sidor långa synopsis av boken (pdf). Du kommer att genomföra och lägga fram exjobbet på din hemma-institution och med en lärare därifrån som handledare. Daniel Pargman (KTH/CSC/MID samt KTH Centre for Sustainable Communications) som har utformat denna exjobbsbeskrivning kommer dock att agera uppdragsgivare för exjobbet. Books I've read (October)

The four books below were read as part of the small research project "The past 25 years of the future" that I wrote about half a year ago. We are reading books (below) and articles about past visions of the future information society. Here are the books I wrote about in my previous blog post books I've read recently.



**** John Howkins and Robert Valantin's "Development and the information age: Four global scenarios for the future of information and communication technology" (1997) is not so much a book as it is a report. It is only 50 pages long and still at that contains a lot of air ("this page intentionally left blank", large font etc.). It was impossible to get hold of in printed format but it can be download from the Internet. The report describes the results of a high-powered workshop sponsored by the UN (the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development, UNCSTD). The 5 days long workshop that underlies the report had 27 participants and "was held in delightful surroundings at Kelburn Castle in Scotland in June of 2006". Except for the "usual suspects" (from the global north), there was also participants from the global south (Ethiopia, Colombia, India, Malaysia, Jamaica, South Africa, China).

The report represents a "classic" scenario study where the participants started by identifying five development indicators, inherent uncertainties and key trends leading up to a "scenario cross" with four fields. Since the workshop was held 18 years ago and the topic was the future of "the Internet" (global computer networks, telecommunications), it is easy to feel that the results are dated by now but in our study, we are also interested in trying to understand how they thought about the future information society at that time so it still works for us as as chronicle of that time. The highlight of the report itself might very well be the names of the four scenarios; "The March of Follies", "Cargo Cult", "Netblocs", and "Networld".



*************** Adam Greenfield is an insider. He was lead information architect in a web bureau at the time of the dot-com crash. And, he's a sceptic. His 2006 book "Everyware: The dawning age of ubiquitous computing" consist of 81 "theses" often not much longer than one page and hardly never longer than three pages. Each thesis is a sentence-long statement and the second thesis explains the title of the book:

"There many forms of ubiquitous computing are indistinguishable from the user's perspective and will appear to a user as aspects of a single paradigm: everyware."

While everyware bears many promises, Greenfield is more interested in the potential problems. And boy, are there many to worry about. From technical and infrastructure challenges, to the interface and the user experience (how do we know these systems will help us rather than endlessly frustrate us?), to the potential for surveillance and repression. The list goes on. 

While Greenfield is prescient in many of his predictions - some are only starting to be discussed only now, 8 years after the book was written - the book also feels slightly anachronistic, like there is a strange time warp at play here. The book was written one year before Apple marketed the first iPhone and modern smartphones as the window/terminal/remote control to the Internet and ubiquitous computing resources and systems isn't really anywhere to find in the book. Despite Greenfield's insights, the book feels "needlessly" but inevitably aged because of that if for no other reason. I still thought it was an interesting book, well worth reading, but I still wish I would have read it some years ago, before the 2010's.



************ I read two scientific articles by Dourish and Bell two years ago ("Yesterday's tomorrows: Notes on ubiquitous computing's dominant vision" and "Resistance is futile: Reading science fiction alongside ubiquitous computing"). Both were excellent. I thought this book would be a continuation/expended version of those articles, and I guess it was to some extent, but not very. Paul Dourish and Genevieve Bell's "Diving a digital future: Mess and mythology in ubiquitous computing" (2011) consists of much heavier, theoretical stuff. I can, on one level, appreciate that since much research in the computer sciences can feel naive and severely social science-deprived. But the book was on the other hand not really for me. I don't really do research in/on ubicomp and are not well versed (or interested) in most of the theoretical perspectives presented in the book. It was still interesting enough for me to find a dozen passages worth quoting (see below). From the back cover of the book:

"The ubicomp research agenda originated at Xerox PARC in the late 1980s ... In Divining a Digital Future, computer scientist Paul Dourish and cultural anthropologist Genevieve Bell explore the vision that has driven the ubiquitous computing research program and the contemporary practices that have emerged - both the motivation mythology and the everyday messiness of lived experience."

PS. Paul Dourish is at UC Irvine and was sort of a nominal (?) colleague of mine this past spring when I was on a sabbatical there. We met a few times but talked but a little. His end-of-the-semester party in his home was great though - we should adopt such practices here in Sweden!



***** Majid Yar's just-published (2014) "The cultural imaginary of the Internet: Virtual utopias and dystopias" is a very sleek book, clocking in at only 80 pages. Yar is a British professor of sociology and his book is a neat summary of hopes and fears about the Internet. I liked it, but just as I started to get into it, the book ended. And, it's crazy expensive (>70 USD). From the back cover:

"Contemporary cultures offer contradictory views of the internet and new media technologies, painting, them in extremes of optimistic enthusiasm and pessimistic foreboding. While some view them as a repository of hopes for democracy, freedom and self-realisation, others consider these developments as sources of alienation, dehumanisation and danger. This book explores such representations and situates them within the traditions of utopian and dystopian thought that have shaped the Western cultural imaginary."

----- On the the promise of using ICT for development in the 1990's  -----

"While the countries of the [OECD] are becoming more aware of the "haves" and "have-nots" within their own societies, there is a similar but much larger division between "haves" and "have-nots" on a global scale.
Can ICTs help to close the gap? Or will they widen it? Access to the skills, equipment, and networks that allow entry to the information society are largely the privilege of rich countries and, elsewhere, select urban centres and the elite within them. Developments in the North are moving much faster than those in the South. The flow of information, knowledge, and resources is mostly North to South; there is still very little South to North or South to South."

----- On developing scenarios  -----

"This publication [presents] four scenarios of ICTs and development over the next 15-20 years. ... The scenario process ... starts with an open brainstorming session in which people put forward their views about a specific situation, specify variables, and raise issues from today to, say, a 15-year horizon or beyond. Sometimes the moderator will ask each person what he or she would ask of an oracle who had promised to answer three questions ... Each scenario starts with certainties and introduces uncertainties. ... the scenarios should not just tell a believable story but should also identify the main decision points faced by decision-makers ... Scenario planning does not demonstrate which scenario is the most likely. The aim is to uncover and articulate the basic parameters in a believable situation, regardless of whether the planners and decison-makers regard them as likely to happen. By spotlighting paths ahead, the process can also help to identify areas that remain in darkness."

----- On ICT in affluent vs developing countries  -----

"What is the balance between ownership, control, access, and impact? Is having a telephone network owned by a foreign company worse than not having one at all?
...
Tariffs are another important issue. In OECD countries, the average rate for telephone access and for internet access is about 1% of average income (and using both services costs 2% of income). Rates in developing countries are usually higher. Indeed, there is an inverse correlation between per-capita income and the cost of access: the higher the income, the lower the cost. As a result, although many have access in principle, few can afford it. Governments face a challenge: Whether to put the priority on higher charges, to increaser revenues in the short-term, or to reduce charges to increase traffic."

Developing countries have little input. ... talented young people who want to work in software development are forced, because of the lack of local training schemes and local opportunities, to go to the USA, Europe, or Singapore. ... I didn't know that this toilet would test my urine for the breakdown products of opiates and communicate its finding to my doctor, my insurers, or law-enforcement personnel."

"Perhaps my living room has two entirely separate and distinct voice-activated systems, say, the wallscreen and the actual window - to which a command to "close the window" would be meaningful. How are they to know which window I mean?

----- On what technology "wants"  -----

if you're having trouble getting a grip on how these would work in practice ... there's a panoply of ubiquitous security measures both actual and potential that are subtler stil: navigation systems that omit all paths through an area where a National Special Security Event is transpiring, for example, or subway and buses that are automatically routed past. Elevators that won't accept requests for floors you're not accredited for; retain items, from liquor to ammunition ... that won't let you purchase them, that simply cannot be rung up. Context-aware differential permissioning used as a security tool will mean that certain options simply do not appear as available to you, like grayed-out items on desktop meny - in fact, you won't get even that backhanded notification, you won't even know the options ever existed.."

----- On falling prices and the resultant lavish use of computing power  -----

"As the price of processors falls dramatically ... we can afford to spend that power freely, even lavishly, with the result that computing resources can be brought to bear on comparatively trivial tasks. We arrive at the stage where processor power can be economically devoted to addressing everyday life: As Mark Weiser put it, "where are the car keys, can I get a parking place, and is that shirt I saw last week at Macy's still on the rack""

----- On complexity and (lack of) control  -----

"Before they are knit together, the systems that comprise [ubiquitous computing] may appear to be relatively conventional, with well-understood interfaces and affordances. When interconnected, they will assuredly interact in emergent and unpredictable ways.

We should never make the mistake of believing, as designers, users or policymakers, that we understand exactly what we're dealing with in an abstract discussion of [ubiquitous computing]. How can we fully understand, let alone propose to regulate, a technology whose important consequences may only arise combinatorially as a result of its specific placement in the world?"

----- On empowering technologies leading to atrophying mental skills  -----

"Marshall McLuhan taught us, in his 1964 Understand Media, "every extension is [also] an amputation." By this he meant that when we rely on technical systems to ameliorate the burdens of everyday life, we invariably allow our organic faculties to atrophy to a corresponding degree. ... Elevators allow us to live and work hundreds of feet into the air, but we can no longer climb even a few flights without becoming winded. Cars extend the radius of our travels by many times, but it becomes automatic to hop into one if we're planning to travel any further than the corner store
...
"Amputation," though, implies that a faculty had at least once existed. But it's also the case that the presence of an ambient informatics might interfere in learning certain skills to begin with.
...
Children ... Able to rely on paraphernalia like personal location icons, route designators, and turn indicators, whether they will ever learn the rudiments of navigation ... is open to question. Even memorizing street names might prove to be an amusingly antiquated demonstration of pointless skill"

"It may turn out that ubiquitous voice recognition has more power to enforce crisp enunciation than any locution teacher ever dreamed of wielding. This is problematic in two ways. First, of course, is the pragmatic concern that it forces users to focus on tool and not task, and thus violates every principle of an encalming pervasive technology. But more seriously, we probably weren't looking to our household management system for speech lessons. Why should we mold something as intimate, and as constitutive of personality, as the way we speak around some normative profile encoded into the systems around us?"

----- On complex systems sprouting "insolvable" problems  -----

"Let's consider the example of a "smart" household-management system, to which all of the local heating, lighting, ventilation, and plumbing infrastructure has been coupled. In the hope of striking a balance between comfort and economy, you've set its winter mode to lower any room's temperature to 60 degrees Fahrenheit when that room has been empty for ten minutes or more, but to maintain it at 68 otherwise.
When the heat fails to come on in one room or another, which of the interlinked systems involved has broken down? Is it a purely mechanical problem with the heater itself, the kind of thing you'd call a plumber for? Is it a hardware issue - say, a failure of the room's motion detector to properly register your presence? Maybe the management interface has locked up or crashed entirely. It's always possible that your settings file has become corrupt. Or perhaps these systems have between them gotten into some kind of strange feedback loop.
...
Diagnosis of simple defaults in ubiquitous systems will likely prove to be inordinately time-conuming by current standards, but systems that display emergent behavior may confound diagnosis entirely."
