Our Super Excellent Scenarios & Impacts paper (paper)

It's been a standing joke between us four authors for a long time - referring to our not-yet-published paper as our "New and Super Excellent Scenarios & Impacts paper".

We are here talking about a paper that is based on a research project ("Scenarios and impacts of the information society") that ended quite some time ago (for example see this blog post from the beginning of 2015 or this blog post from February 2013). It's also the case that this is a rewritten version of a paper that has already been submitted once (back in April 2016!), but that was rejected by the journal Technological Forecasting and Social Change. So we have now rewritten the paper and are submitting it to another journal in the hope that we will have better luck this time around.

There is another related article that has been on a parallell track. It concerns more or less the same results from the very same project but aimed towards "my" area, Human-Computer Interaction and has a quite different take on these research results. Another difference is that I'm first author (= workhorse) of that article. We submitted that article to NordiCHI 2016 (to the "Future Scenarios" track) back in May 2016 but it was rejected. We then rewrote it and resubmitted it to CHI 2017 in September 2016 and it was later accepted (in December 2016) and presented by me in Denver in May 2017.

I have a distinct feeling that the HCI article (where I was the first author) muscled itself in and took over a meeting when we were supposed to discuss the article we have now finally resubmitted. But it's also true that it has taken more than a year to finish rewriting this paper (i.e. it could have been resubmitted a year ago had we pursued that goal a bit more aggressively). I also have a distinct feeling I personally should have put more work into helping out and working with the text etc., but this alas seems to be the article that has recurrently slipped between the finger of all the four co-authors.

Anyway, I'm glad it was resubmitted ten days ago and I will write a non-anonymous blog post about the article as soon as it (hopefully) gets accepted!

Dear editor,

Here comes a paper titled “[XXX]” written by myself and three colleagues. The paper has not been published elsewhere, but we have written about the same research project in the Proceeding of the 2017 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, Pages 773-785 (https://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=3025858). There the focus was on what HCI and design fiction can learn from Futures Studies in general and from this project in particular. In the paper we submit to [the journal XXX], the focus is on presenting five ICT scenarios, how we developed them and what can be learnt from them in terms of how different actors can make use of them, how their sustainability content can be assessed, and ICT as ideology. Thus, it’s not the same paper as in the proceedings from the CHI conference.

Cities4Good (application)

I'm part of a group (led by the University of Deusto in Spain) that handed in a EU application last week, "Cities4Good: Coping with Societal Challenges through Smart Cities". I'm the lead/contact person for KTH but have worked together with my colleagues Mattias Höjer and Elina Eriksson on this application.

The application is a "Marie Curie Innovative Training Networks" application and it's the third time I'm part of such an application. One year ago I participated in the application "Smart home technology for sustainable practices" and three years ago I participated in the application "Energy-aware cloud-based software engineering" but I have nothing to show for it this far.

If granted, the project will get money to hire 15 ph.d. students for three years at six universities and four research institutes/research-oriented organisations in nine different countries:

- Pro Future, Austria (a  research company working with "cognitive products") (P2F)
- Institut Mines Telecom, France (a public R&D institution working with engineering and digital technologies) (IMT)

There are also another dozen of partner organizations including Swedish White Arkitekter (we recruited them).

The short version of what this application is about is: "Cities4Good will make a critical contribution to the next generation of Smart Cities by interlinking disciplines from sensor technology and integration, behaviour modelling, human-machine interaction, user experience and user acceptance while keeping citizens’ well-being, needs, and interests as its main focus."

That high-level goal is broken down into four scientific objectives (SO1-SO4) and four application areas (APP1-APP4) which form a grid:

Since the information is there for the taking (in the application), I have published the description of (the KTH-relevant) APP2, SO3 and SO4 at the very bottom of this document.

The whole point of these Marie Curie applications is to fund 15 ph.d. students and send them around Europe on network meetings and on "secondments" (visits to other network members). The KTH ph.d. student (should we get one) would have me as the main advisor and Mattias Höjer and Elina Eriksson as co-advisors) but he/she would also visit three other project/network partners during his/her time as a ph.d. student; Pro Future (working on more technical aspects within the Sustainability & Energy application area), DeustoTech/University of Desuto (who is coordinating the application and is all over it) and Saxion University (also working on "User acceptance & Adherence" but within the application area "Citizen inclusion in decision-making processes").

It is also interesting to note that no less than six of the 14 non-KTH ph.d. students want to come and visit KTH on their secondments. These students would come to KTH one and a half, two and three years into the project (the ph.d. students would be recruited after the project starts and would start their ph.d. studies nine months into the project). These are more specifically the project of those six incoming ph.d. students:

Here's the task/work description of the KTH ph.d. studen we would want to recruit should we get this funding:

"Reducing and replacing energy intensive practices in the smart sustainable city"

Objectives: Many visions of future smart cities focus exclusively on a range of technologies and their potential to reshape urban life so as to attain desired goals. One urgent goal is to make European cities more sustainable and energy efficient as well as “smarter”. This individual research project will instead focus on the interplay between technologies and citizens’ daily practices as key for working towards increased user acceptance and adherence of such goals. We are in particular interested in how digitization can be used as a means and we more specifically ask how digitization can support a transition to low-energy smart sustainable cities by supporting citizens’ evolving low-energy social practices. 

This project will focus on studying, understanding, leveraging and supporting the evolution of existing and potential low-energy practices through digitization. These practices could be the result of conscious choices by “forerunners”, environmentally conscious citizens who voluntarily curtail their energy use, but, they could also result from a lack of (various) resources (for example financial resources). Hence this project will take a co-creation and co-design approach to making future smart cities better equipped to address the needs of their citizens. With a design thinking approach and using user-centred methodologies (taking a lead from Human-Computer Interaction) such as design probes and triggering material, the project will address opportunities and barriers for changing energy intensive practices. 

It might also turn out to be interesting to compare and contrast attempts to affect citizens’ behavior through designing appropriate technologies with the alternative of implementing suitable (top- down) policies, something legal scholar Lawrence Lessig did (1999) when he contrasted computer code with legal code. Both methods (technology, regulation) can make some things easier and other things harder, make some things possible that were previously impossible or make some things impossible that were previously possible.

APP2: Sustainability & Energy
Large cities and megalopolis are witnessing a dramatic increase of CO2 emissions mainly due to unsustainable mobility (e.g. one person per car, overuse of private transportation for short journeys, etc.). Some municipalities around the globe are introducing contingency measures such as eco-taxes, reducing the number of cars in circulation by applying road space rationing and incentivizing the use of public transport via subsidies. One of the main open questions that we want to address is the role of Smart (Persuasive) Cities in the sustainability equation: Cities4Good envisages that it is possible to offset the carbon used for creating such technological equipment by changing the way citizens behave in their cities and, even, to transform entire cities into greener environments able to cooperate with their inhabitants through persuasive techniques and social influence.

SO3: Citizen Interaction with the City
Cities4Good will develop, implement and evaluate novel interaction methods between the citizens and their city. These methods will aim to encourage urban interaction, facilitating both the relations with the city administration and its servants and between the citizens themselves. The envisioned interaction methods will empower citizens to use co-creation approaches for city planning, to better focus on their needs. They will also make use of persuasive computing to help the citizens to improve their daily living. 

SO4: User Acceptance & Adherence
While SO1, SO2 and SO3 are centred on developing new and innovative technologies, SO4 will study how these new technologies are adopted by the citizens. Specifically, Cities4Good will 1) study non-technical factors concerning the implementation of sensor technologies in urban places with regard to ‘human-in- the-loop sensing’ and non-human input; 2) study mechanisms and exogenous factors of policy diffusion, such as how resources, motivations and opinion leadership may enable information to flow between stakeholders and lead to faster adoption; and 3) increase the knowledge with regard to the needs and expectations of specific (sub)groups regarding intelligent technologies in public spaces in order to anticipate technology acceptance in peoples’ daily public life.

Adopt an activist (paper)

Last week (January 15) I submitted a paper to alt.chi for the first time:

"alt.chi 2018 continues the tradition of bringing substantive, thought-provoking, original work to CHI through an alternative approach. alt.chi is appropriate for submissions that prove difficult to assess through the main Papers track, whether for reasons of methodology, style or content. A Juried review process ensures that high standards for excellence are maintained. alt.chi hosts some of the most audacious and insightful presentations at the conference. This is the avant-garde of CHI. We invite the submission of bold, compelling, critical, and innovative works that challenge or re-imagine human computer interaction research and design."

I literally worked until the very last minute together with co-author Bonnie Nardi (through Skype) and I uploaded the paper a bit more than one minute and a bit less than one and a half minutes before the deadline. The last hour and especially the last 10-15 minutes were adrenaline-filled and I had to calm down for half an hour afterwards before I was able to go home (I worked late).

As apart from "ordinary" CHI papers, alt.chi papers are not anonymized so I believe it's ok for me to tell you that our paper, "Adopt an Activist: A ”Transformation-tithe” to Support Collaboration Between Activists and Researchers" has been written by me together with Bonnie Nardi, Bran Knowles and Pella Thiel. The core idea of the paper is that we "[propose] a platform that would enable scholars to “adopt an activist,” that is to band together to fund an activist working for their cause".

The paper builds on some ideas I've been thinking about on and off for several years and one of the starting points for these ideas actually happens to be captured in the frustration that is almost palpable in two blog posts I wrote back in 2012, "Writing research grants applications = wasted time?" and "My price tag". I have been thinking about these challenges in terms of them being a very practical, personal problem for me (e.g. "how can I solve this?") until I met Bonnie at a workshop we both attended in Siegen, Germany back in October; "Solutions for Economics, Environment and Democracy". When I told her about the problem and my proposal for a (personal) solution, she opened up the possibility of scaling it up and making it into something that would be relevant to many people and that we could write an alt.chi paper about. Bran later had some interesting additional ideas and the fourth author, Pella, is in fact not a researcher at all but an activist. So we basically recruited an activist to help us write a paper with a suggestion for how researchers and activists could better work together. I think that was a very smooth move and that the resulting paper is both evocative and provocative. I don't have any experiences of how the alt.chi "juried" process works but have high hopes our paper will be accepted. I truly believe it describes and argues for a never-before-heard concept and that the paper would be much appreciated by researchers who are, who study or who for other reasons "are into" activism.

The paper was however also written under time pressure and this pressure was not just severe but extreme at the very end. I wouldn't have been able to make it without the last 24-hour burst of work and especially the very last few hours together with Bonnie. Or, I might have made it, but the paper wouldn't have been anywhere as good as it is now, with the help of Bonnie's expert last-minute penmanship. The basic problem is that I've just had so many tasks and so many deadlines since the beginning of January (see previous blog posts as well as the next one). This is also the reason I've been publishing not just two but three blog posts per week as of lately. I take for granted that it will be highly interesting to activists too of course!

Adopt an Activist: A ”Transformation- tithe” to Support Collaboration Between Activists and Researchers

Activists are devoted to their causes and do not have a livelihood from the job “activist.” Researchers are generally employed by universities, government agencies, or corporations. A cluster of researchers could support one activist, promoting transformative change through the activist’s work. The platform would also provide a public space to share the results of the activists’ work and to build new networks of researchers and activists who might eventually engage in collaborative projects."

Educating the unreasonable engineer (paper)

KTH is hosting the 12th International Sustainable Campus Conference between June 11-13 this year. Me and my colleague Elina Eriksson know the people who organize it and they sent us a personal invitation. We wanted (and we felt compelled) to submit an abstract (on the day of the deadline, January 15).

It's not quite clear to us if the organizers require us to write a paper of if the abstract below is enough for us to (maybe) be invited to give an oral presentation. We for sure intend to write a paper and if not for this conference, then for another. We in fact came up with the title for this paper already back in May 2016 when we wrote the paper "Sustainable development for ICT engineering students - “What’s in it for me?”" for the Engineering Education for Sustainable Development (EESD) 2016 conference.

That paper had five authors and me and Elina wanted to push the paper a bit further than then other authors. I believe we could all agree that our students should be "change agents" in the companies they will work in, but me and Elina might have said that we wanted them to be "activists" too. Since we couldn't agree, that particular part was left out and me and Elina said we wanted to write a paper about it at a later point in time and this is (or will be) that paper!

Educating the unreasonable engineer
We having taught a course about sustainability and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to masters students in a media technology engineering programme at the KTH Royal Institue of Technology since 2012 and have, through various scholarly publications documented our experiences and thoughts (Pargman and Eriksson 2013; Eriksson and Pargman 2014; Eriksson et al. 2016, Pargman, Hedin and Eriksson 2016; Pargman and Eriksson 2016; Eriksson and Pargman 2018). 

As we look back we notice how our own attitude to our course and to the ulterior purpose of teaching it has changed significantly during that period. We have gone from taking on the role of “truth-tellers” or “rabble-rousers” (who implicitly encouraged students to become activist) to “guides by the side” who educate sustainable engineering students (Mann 2011; Mann 2017). While we ourselves have calmed down and settled in as “tempered radicals” (Meyerson and Scully 1995), we still want our students to become “unreasonable engineers”, e.g. “change agents” in their future professions in the sense that George Bernard Shaw discussed the merits of unreasonableness 100 years ago:

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man” (Shaw 1903/2013).

We discuss our course and the changes in our mindsets more extensively in the accompanying paper as well as what it is we actually do in the course to attain the goals we have set ourselves.

Blog post #500

This is blog post #500! I started the blog in September 2010 - more than seven years ago. This is also the fourth installment in this particular series of blog posts:
Blog post #200 + 3rd anniversary of the blog! (September 2013)
Blog post #300 + 4th anniversary of the blog! (October 2014)
Blog post #400 + 6th anniversary of the blog! (September 2016)

It took three years to publish the first 200 blog posts, a little more than a year to write the next 100 blog posts, the better part of two more years to publish the next 100 blog posts and slightly less than one and a half years to publish the last 100 blog posts.

I recently wrote some about statistics and trends so this is a good time to more qualitatively reflect on the blog and how the content and my blogging has developed and changed over time. My intention was that this should be a short blog post - in this particular blog post I feel I have nothing in particular to prove! - but that didn't come to pass.

1. Blog frequency; "blog burnout". The first observation is that I have, for the most part, lived up to the goals I set up in the very first blog post, i.e. to publish a minimum of one and a maximum of two blog posts per week. There have, during these seven and a half years, by now been three periods when I hardly publish anything at all for about 4-5 months each. Part of it is that I have experienced cyclical blog "burnouts" when a combination of factors coincide like a) not having enough time to blog (due to a high work load or matters in my personal life in combination with b) having too high demands on the quality and length of each blog post. The result is a backlash, a longer "blog vacation" - but I always come back. The blog is just too useful and too much part of my life by now to stop blogging permanently. I also try to handle these "stress factors" by (mentally) lowering the demands on each blog post, for example by trying to be a bit more relaxed and not feel the requirement to write really long blog posts about a workshop or a conference (that can easily take hours to write). It's ok to pick a few notable parts and write only about them rather than to feel a compulsion of having to cover everything from start to finish.

2. Blog frequency; "busy beaver". As apart from the behavior of not writing at all during longer periods of time, it has also happened that I, during shorter periods, have written more than twice per week. This is unusual but I am as a matter of fact doing that right now so as to "catch up" with a multitude of recent events and activities. There was so much work in December that I didn't have time to write about any of it! I only hade time to take up blogging after the Christmas break started and the first thing I did (Dec 22) was to backdate a blog post 16 days to when it "should" have been published (Dec 6). I then realized I had so much to write about and modestly speeded up the publication of blog post in December from twice per week to every three days. This was later, in January, increased to three blog posts per week - while simultaneously striving to decrease and get rid of the backlog. So I have as of lately published blog posts every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday but since I'm still "behind", I have also strived for (but not always succeeded in) publishing and backdating a new blog post every 36 hours or so (ex. Monday morning - Tuesday evening - Thursday morning etc.). Since I recently went on a sabbatical, I have by now almost caught up with the backlog - this blog post is published on Tuesday morning January 23 but was supposed to have been published (and will be backdated to) Sunday January 21. So I have almost caught up and I will start to publish in realtime at the end of this week. My next goal is to decrease the pace from a staggered three blog posts per week to a more manageable two posts per week (so as to not suffer "blog burnout" a few weeks or months from now).

3. My publication plan. A recent "invention" of mine was to set up a relatively serious "publication plan". The publication plan is housed inside a constantly evolving draft blog post (which will never be published but) that you get a peek of below. Instead of sitting down in front of a "blank paper" every week or every single time I will write a blog post, I now jot down notes about current or future bloggable topics (events) that I might write about (for example by glancing at upcoming meetings and events in my calendar). These topics are pitched against each other as well as against the number of free slots and I can now all of a sudden plan by reflecting on which topics are most relevant and interesting to develop into blog posts and only then move them into the publication plan. I can of course switch them around up until the very last moment, but I all of a sudden have foresight and can now see into the future. I also think this might partly be good a remedy against "blog burnout".

This is how I came to the conclusion that I needed to write three blog posts per week in January; there was a backlog of things to write about and this became clear when I tried to match a long list of topics with specific upcoming dates. This is also how I can state (promise) that I will shrink the backlog of books that have read but haven't yet written about on the blog from 18 to 6 months between now and the summer. I will write a new blog post about "Books I've read recently" every three weeks during the spring, I just published the latest installment in that series (see my previous blog post) and I already have the next nine batches of books and dates mapped out (between now and the end of July).

4. More research, more papers. Looking back at the blog's history, I write a lot more academic papers now so the blog has become more of an archive of what I do research-wise than an archive of topics I think about, reflect upon and analyze. Many blog posts are a relatively quick write nowadays as they are just milestones that document that something (say a paper) has been submitted somewhere. Such a blog post will have some information about the venue the paper was submitted to, perhaps some previous information about the paper (if the paper has a history on the blog) and the paper abstract. I also strive for always saying something about the paper that isn't in the paper, for example an anecdote about how the paper came to be, something about its history and development, about the process of writing it up (quick of fast, easy or difficult etc.) or perhaps something about my cooperation/relationship with the co-authors. I would like offer someone who reads the paper at a later point in time and then comes across the blog post some additional information about the paper.

5. On the functions of this blog. A long time ago, back in November 2011, I wrote a blog post about the many functions of this blog. I basically made a long list and I have read through that list and thought I'd comment on what is still valid and what has changed since then.

Much is the same since the basic functionality of this blog or indeed any blog is pretty stable over time. This blog is (still) a diary and record of my work-related activities. It is also a place where I collect and keep track of work- and career-related information. (It's for example a good place to go when I need to update my CV). I can quickly find blog posts I'm looking for despite the fact that there are 500 blog posts here by now. It is harder to find/remember those blog posts I haven't looked for - I'm sure there are blog posts that would be useful to remember but both the name and the content is non-descript and doesn't stand out. I have as of lately started to add a keyword to some blog post like (workshop), (paper), (books) and (course). Perhaps I should go through the blog with a focus on those blog posts that don't stand out at some point. It isn't be too hard to find these blog posts with the blog management tools that are at my (but not your) disposal. I might then also rename some older blog posts to make their titles more memorable (the link will not be changed - only the displayed name).

One effect of keeping a diary/record is that it becomes a permanent archive where I can go back and look for things (what was the link to that conference? what was the name of that person? what were the memorable quotes from that book?). I can also direct others (for example students) to specific blog posts that has some leads or links that might be useful for them. Creating blog posts with a lot of links is however hard work. I believe that as the proportion of research (e.g. papers) has increased, I can instead just give away a paper that has many references and links to further research in an area.

Another effect of having a blog is that other people can follow me (my teaching, my research, my thoughts). I have no idea how many people follow me in the sense that they are notified every time I publish a blog post (say, through RSS). As I always post a status update on Facebook, I think more people "follow" my new blog posts through Facebook and then selectively check out specific blog post. I don't have a very good grasp of exactly who reads or how often though. I would assume that colleagues read blog posts about events they themselves have participated/are interested in (if they see a link to the blog post in Facebook). Except for that I just don't know. Perhaps some of my students or even some ex-students follow the blog? I would also assume that (some) non-KTH researchers who have overlapping interests follow my blog or at least selectively read some of the blog posts.

One of the goals back then was to encourage others (primarily colleagues) to start (academic) blogs. Some have expressed interest but few have acted on that interest. The one exception is my ex-colleague Jonas Moll who has blogged since October 2016 at about the same pace that I do. I might have known but can't remember if he has explicitly stated that this blog of mine has inspired him to start blogging but it might be that that is the case.

I end with yet another new year's promise that I just thought of (I will add it to the Jan 1 blog post with a long list of such promises). I spend a lot of the time writing blog posts but haven't been so diligent at keeping the static pages updated. So I should do that and make sure that (for example) the list of publication is current at least at some point during this year. That shouldn't be too hard as I will hand in an application for promotion sometime during the next six months. I might as well update the blog after I hand in the application.

Books I've read (August-September 2016)

I read the books below more than a year ago, in August and September 2016. All books concern the intersection of ecology, sustainability and politics. There are a lot of quotes from these books further below (about 125 in total!) and the quotes are represented by the number of asterisks right below. Here's the previous blog post about books I have read.

*************************** Andrew Dobson's Green Political Thought is a classic. The first edition came out in 1990 and I actually read it when I was an undergraduate student. I remember I thought it was great and felt the book merited a re-reading and then actually went out and bought the most recent, fourth edition of the book (2007). So I invested money in buying "the same" book one more time and my expectations were obviously very high. While the book was good, it wasn't as good as I expected it to be. Perhaps it was hard for the actual book to beat my memory of the book? Or perhaps the fourth edition wasn't as good as the first edition? That might actually be the case but it's not as if I have compared the different editions despite the fact that I sit with both these books in front of me as I write this.

Dobson's book treat ecologism as an ideology and analyses where it comes from, what it stands for and compares it to other political ideologies. From the back cover of the first edition, it says:

"Green political thought provides a clear and stimulating explanation of the ideas, aims and strategies of the Green movement. ... as  more individuals and organizations have climbed aboard the Green bandwagon, the central ideas of green politics have become obscured. Andrew Dobson has remedied the situation with this highly accessible introduction. ... This book will be of interest to anyone either inside or outside the Green movement who is concerned to understand better the ideas behind Green politics."

On the back cover of the fourth edition (published 17 years later), it says:

"This highly acclaimed introduction to green political thought is now availaine in a new edition, having been fully revised and updated to take into account the areas which have grown in importance since the third edition was published. ... Green policitical thought remains the starting point for all students, academics and activists who want an introduction to green political theory."

Matz Hammarström's "Grön ideologi" [Green ideology] is not so much a book as a 34 pages long pamphlet that was commissioned by the Swedish Green Party at their 1999 congress and published in 2002. I don't know where I got it from, but thought it was fitting to read it right after Dobson's book. The pamphlet is a quick read but does in fact contain some real substance. I thought it was great - in fact much better, much more interesting and much more reasonable than the current politics stances of the Swedish Green Party.

As I belatedly look up info about the pamphlet, I find an interesting text by ex-Green party leader (spokesperson) Birger Schlaug from 2014 where he talks not about the pamphlet abut about the Green party's crisis back in 2002 that they solved by throwing important parts of the green ideology overboard.

******************************************** This book, "What Next Volume III: Climate, Development and Equity" was pressed into my hand at an event and I know exactly where that event was held but have a harder time remembering exactly what the event was. After having racked my brain, I have come to the conclusion that it was Naturskyddsföreningen's [The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, SSNC] 2012 autumn conference. It's a little hard to know what it means but the book is "co-published" by Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation and the What Next Forum. It was published in 2012 and it is edited by Niclas Hällström (Director of What Next Forum). The book can anyway be downloaded online for free.

This book consists of 20+ chapters and while some really were very good, others did not attain the same quality. One thing that was interesting though was that it had quite a few chapters written by people from non-Western countries (China, India, South America and elsewhere). But some texts went a little too deep (required specialist knowledge to appreciate or even to understand). I'd say this is one of those books that isn't necessarily a great read, but it's a good book to have read. From the back cover:

"This What Next Volume presents voices from across the North and South, addressing the combined challenges of climate, development and equity. it highlights the urgency of taking action, but also shows why any attempt to tackle climate change must be grounded in equity. how will humanity fairly divide the rapidly diminishing global carbon budget, while allowing billions of people in the global South (and North) the means for economic, social and environmental well-being?"

***************** Paul Robbins' "Political ecology" was first published in 2004 and the second edition is from 2012. It's supposed to be a modern classic and I heard it being referred to repeatedly when I attended the "Undisciplined Environments" conference the better part of two years ago. I was intrigued enough to feel I should read up and this was the one book I bought.

This book is an introduction to "political ecology" - "a field that seeks to unravel the political forces at work in environmental access, management, and transformation". The sworn enemy is "apolitical ecology" - like "Limits to Growth" and "crude Malthusianism". I'm not sure how I feel about that and I furthermore find this quote (especially the part I made bold) patently absurd:

"Even if petroleum becomes scarce, the rising price per barrel will encourage the use of otherwise expensive alternatives like wind and solar power, or simply cause consumers to drive less, endlessly stretching the world's energy supply. While such optimistic prognoses are themselves fraught with problems, they do point to an important and increasingly well-accepted truism: resources are constructed rather than given."

But much else is indeed interesting even though it was a quite heavy read, it did broaden my views about the political dimensions of many environmental problems. Still, the conference was a bit weird. Some things which are problematic could not be brought up because the story didn't fit the preferred exceedingly politically informed (PC) narrative that was more or less mandated.

*********************************** While I had seen this book before, the decision to actually buy it came to me at the same conference that made me buy Robbins' book (above). I listened to a panel of sorts about the book and at least one of the editors, Giorgios Kallis, was there. As it so turns out, I will visit him hand his research group at the Autonomous University (UAB) in Barcelona this coming spring. The book "Degrowth: A vocabulary for a new era" (2015) is edited by Giacomo D'Alisa (research fellow at UAB), Federico Demaria (PhD candidate at UAB) and Giorgios Kallis (Professor at UAB). 

The book consists of no less than 51 super-short chapters that each centers on a specific term ("anti-utilitarianism", "societal metabolism", "conviviality", "emergy", "disobediance", "public money"). Each chapter is only two or three pages long and has a very limited number of references (three to five). Most chapters have single authors, only about 10 chapters are written by two or more authors. The book consists of four parts ("lines of thought", "the core", "the action", "alliances") and the entries within each part of the book is in fact organized alphatetically (e.g. "Conviviality" is published just before "Dematerialization"). So reading the book is a little like reading an encyclopedia - this is definitely not something you sit down with and read from beginning to the end. It is however something that works excellently as a starting point for various concepts and ideas that you might want to further explore.

One thing that is fun is that I have since physically met some of the authors of some of the book chapters; I met Sylvia Lorek at the workshop on Solutions for Economics, Environment and Democracy I attended in Germany back in October, I recently "met" Filka Sekulova over a special session proposal to the upcoming August 2018 Degrowth conference and recognize other names from distribution lists I now subscribe to and as authors of books I have read over the last 10 years (Tim Jackson, Chris Carlsson, Juliet Schor). A non-unsubstantial part of the chapter authors are in Barcelona and I expect to meet them face to face during the coming weeks and months. I will in fact probably bring this book with me when I go to Barcelona a few weeks from now. From the back cover:

On ecologism vs environmentalism:
"This is a book about 'ecologism' ... I shall be distinguishing between *ecologism* and its more visible cousin *environmentalism*. This book is about the former, not the latter and the the following may be taken as a rough-and-ready distinction between the two:
- *environmentalism* argues for a managerial approach to environmental problems secure in the belief that they can be solved without fundamental changes in present values or patterns of production and consumption;
- *ecologism* holds that a sustainable and fulfilling existence presupposes radical changes in our relationship with the non-human natural world, and in our mode of social and political life.

On ecologism as an ideology:
"I shall argue that environmentalist and ecologism need to be kept apart because they differ not only in degree but also in kind. ... crucially, environmentalism is not an ideology at all. ... ecologism will suggest that climate change is not simply a result of inappropriate technologies for energy production, but rather rather that it is symptomatic of a misreading of the possibilities (or more properly here, constraints) inherent in membership of an interrelated biotic and abiotic community. My point is that while ideologies will disagree over analysis and prescriptions, they will always couch them in terms of fundamental 'truths' about the human condition. On this score, ecologism counts a political ideology while environmentalism does not."

On what constitutes a green ideology:
"each ideology has key tenets, myths and so on that distinguish it from other ideologies, and part of my task will be to outline what these are for ecologism - tenets that distinguish it form other ideologies ... Real-life political ecolgists may not subscribe to the totality of the ideas that are describe and analysed here, but they will draw from the well of inspiration they provide."

On ecologism as a challenge to the Enlightenment attitude:
"the Enlightenment attitude was that the world had been made for human beings and that, in principle, nothing in it could be kept secret from them. ... On two reasons to care for the environment:

On  the green movement's use of gloomy prognostications:
"The radical green's consistent use of an apocalyptic tone is unique in the context of modern political ideologies, and it might be argued that the movement has relied too heavily on these sort of projections as a means of galvanizing people into action. The consequences of this has been twofold. First, there is the unfounded accusation by the movement's critics that it is informed by an overwhelming sense of pessimism as to the prospects of the planet and the human race along with it. In fact the movement's pessimism relates only to the likely life expectancy of current social and political practice. ... The second and perhaps more serious consequence of the movement's reliance on gloomy prognostications is that its theorists appear to have felt themselves absolved from serious thinking about realizing the change they propose. ... It is as though the movement's advocates have felt that the message was so obvious that it only needed to be given for it to be acted upon."

On industrialism's achilles heel:
"Ecologists argue that discussion about the respective merits of communism and capitalism is rather like rearranging the deckchairs on the *Titanic*: they point out that industrialism suffers from the contradiction of undermining the very context in which it is possible, by unsustainably consuming a finite stock of resources in a world that does not have a limitless capacity to absorb the waste produced by the industrial process."

On capitalism 'and' or 'versus' sustainability?
"Porritt has recently shifted his position away from a thoroughgoing critique of capitalism to a cautious endorsement of it. It is, he says, 'the only economic game in town', so if there is no hope for a sustainable capitalism, then there is no hope for sustainability, period. Greens of a more leftist persuasion ... will continue to argue that capitalism is part of the problem rather than part of the solution, principally because the drive for capital accumulation occurs without reference too or respect for the limits imposed by a finit planet"

On ecologists' heroes and villains:
"if twentieth-century physicists Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg are popular figures in the green pantheon, then Francis Bacon, René Descartes and Isaac Newton are their complementary opposites. These three, according to the analysis of most green theorists, produced a world-view at variance in virtually all respects with that demanded by ecological survival in the twentieth century. Briefly, Bacon developed methods and goals for science that involved ... the domination and control of nature; Descartes insisted that even the organic world (plants, animals and so on) was merely an extension of the general mechanical nature of the universe; and Newton held that the workings of this machine universe could be understood by reducing it to a collection of 'solid, massy, hard, impenetrable, movable particles'"

On challenges for green ethics:
"Anyone who has drowned slugs in a cup of beer to stop them eating the lettuces may be congratulated on a certain ecological sensibility (by not using chemical pesticide), but was the action environmentally ethical? ... 'The guidelines as regards day-to-day living and action for a follower of deep ecology remains unduly and unfortunately obscure' ... At the root of all of this is the search for a way of investing value in beings other than in human beings such that we cannot legitimately treat them only as means to our ends"

On potentially misanthoropic ecologists:
"One danger with the whole anti-anthropocentrism stance is that it may be interpreted as a form of misanthropism (hatred of humankind). This danger has become clear in the theoretical stances and political activities of the North American group Earth First! ... One article in an Earth First! journal (engagingly signed Miss Ann Thropy) stated that:

If radical environmentalists were to invent a disease to bring human population back to sanity, it would probably be something like AIDS ... the possible benefits of this to the environment are staggering ... just as the Plague contributed to the demise of feudalism, AIDS has the potential to end industrialism."

On three green take-home lessons from the limits to growth thesis:
"There are three principal aspects of the limits to growth thesis that have come to be of prime importance to the radical green position  They are, first, that technological solutions (broadly understood; i.e. solutions formulated within the bounds of present economic, social and political practices) will not in themselves bring about a sustainable society; second, that the rapid rates of growth aimed for (and often achieved) by industrialized and industrializing societies have an exponential character, which means that dangers stored up over a relatively long period of time can very suddenly have a catastrophic effect and third, that the *interaction* of problems caused by growth means that such problems cannot be dealt with in isolation - i.e. solving one problem does not solve the rest, and may even exacerbate then."

On the alternative to technological wizardry:
"So, if the sustainable society is not, on the face of it, (only) going to be full of environment-friendly technological wizardry, what *will* it be like? Pat of the answer is provided by Garrett Hardin's definition of a 'technological solution': 'one that requires only a change in the techniques of the natural sciences, demanding little or nothing in the way of change in human values or ideas or morality. It follows that if the green movement believes that technology on its own cannot solve the limits to growth problem, then it will have to argue for more profound changes in social thought and practice - changes in human values, ideas of morality an associated practices."

On the green position having science on its side:
"this 'scientific' element in the green position pushes it well beyond a merely romantic respons to the trials and tribulation of industrial society. Greens propose a sustainable society not merely because the think, in terms of some bucolic fantasy, that it would be more pleasant to live in. They believe that science is on their side. This has given rise to a radical green economics that was presaged at the beginning of the century by the so-called 'energy economists' ... On the primacy of ecological sustainability:
"If we can't secure our own biophysical survival, then it is game over for every other noble aspiration or venal self-interest that we may entertain. On four reasons why GNP is inappropriate measure of the economy:
"Paul Ekins point to four reasons why greens (and not a few others) consider GNP to be an inadequate measure of the health of an economy. First, it ignores the production that takes place in the non-monetarized part of the economy ... Second, GNP calculations give us no idea of the distribution of production or its fruits. Third, they give no indication, either, of the sustainability of the economic practices that contribute to production ... Finally ... GNP ignores the costs of production - particularly the environmental costs."

On recycling as necessary but not sufficient:

"*Who* is best places to bring about social change? A central characteristic of green political theory is that it has never consistently asked that question, principally because the answer is held to be obvious: everyone. The general political-ecological position that the environmental crisis will eventually be suffered by everybody on the planet, and that therefore the ideology's appeal is universal, has been perceived as a source of strength for the green movement. ... this may be the movement's basic strategic political error because the universalist appeal is, properly speaking, Utopian. On ecofeminism, childbirth and population:
"One problem ecofeminism needs to confront in the context of the wider aims of the green movement is the reconciliation of the demand for positive evaluation of the activity of childbirth and the need to reduce population levels. Of course, there is no need for such an evaluation to imply a large number of actual births, but a culture that held childbirth in high esteem may find it hard to legitimize population control policies."

On ecologism and the post-industrial society:

The climate crisis; competition vs. cooperation:

Where does societal change come from?:

"In the minds of most people, growth is still associated with an improvement, or well-being. Because of this, some progressive intellectuals take issue with the use of the word degrowth. ... However, the use of a negation for a positive project aims precisely to decolonise an imaginary dominated by a one-way future consisting only of growth. ... Degrowth is a deliberately subversive slogan. Of course some sectors, such as education, medical care, or renewable energy, will need to flourish in the future, while others, such as dirty industries or the financial sector shrink. "The world conservation movement has been increasingly drawn to an economic language. Although many of its members claim to believe in "deep ecology" (the intrinsic value of nature) and revere nature as sacred, the mainstream movement decided to join the economists.
